The quality of the sunlight in winter also adds a lot to these beautiful winter snow scenes. The winter sunlight is gentle throughout most of the day, as the sun is lower then other times of the year. However there are also many challenges for a winter photographer. Fist of all it is harder to get around to more isolates places. Secondly one needs to catch the powder snow before it freezes or melts. Big chunks of snow do not make as good of a photograph as the fine snow gently covering the branches.

The trick to obtaining beautiful winter snow scenes is to catch the snow early in the morning before it melts. The same goes for frost. Frost on leaves creates amazing patterns. It is best to use a macro lens for such photographs as these frost patterns are very fine and the macro lens can pick the fine details.
